Always Looking Up 
When Neil DeGrasse Tyson talks of us modifying foods over centuries he’s correct. Species have been naturally crossed with each other to get the best end product like the colour of carrots from purple to orange. But the current fears about modification aren’t based on cross grafting over a period of time, they’re about modifications in a laboratory using sterilisation, forced growth and perhaps chemical inducements.In the past we were always able to see the grafts, the cross fertilisation of two plants but people fear what they can’t see. The problems surrounding Monsanto and farmers being forced to take their seeds, of their weed killers contaminating water tables in South America and causing still births and other problems leads people to worry about Frankenstein experiments with their food.And what’s so bad that Monsanto have to force people to use heir seeds instead of choosing to or not?
Mr DeGrasse Tyson should not be laughing at those fears. If he knows that there’s no foundation, he should be showing people that and explaining how the genetic modifications are being done.
